Woman's Club of McLean
Service to the Community
The Woman's Club of McLean supports our community through a spectrum of activities in addition to its annual Holiday Homes fundraising.
Education. WCM places great priority giving support to our local schools at all levels
as spearheaded by Education Committee members.
WCM's Catherine Hart Scholarship is offered to George Mason University undergraduate
or graduate women with financial need, including women re-entering the work force.
WCM annually sponsors two McLean high school sophomores to participate in the
Hugh O’Brien Youth (HOBY) summer camp on business leadership.
In addition, WCM sponsors two McLean High School rising
seniors who are selected to participate in the American Legion Auxiliary Virginia Girls State
program on government leadership.
Each May, WCM holds a combined Safety Patrol and Music Awards ceremony to salute
students from all five area elementary schools and our two intermediate schools.
WCM Safety Patrol trophies are awarded to two safety patrols from each of the five area
elementary schools determined by their teachers to have achieved excellence in their
responsibilities. Faculty, police officers and parents are invited to this ceremony.
The WCM Music Awards are given to two students each at Longfellow and Cooper
Intermediate Schools who have been selected by their band and orchestra staff. The four
students also are invited to perform a musical composition of their choice at the WCM May
luncheon. WCM members are consistently impressed by the excellence of our local
students and it is a most heartening experience to be able to recognize young people in
the community for their accomplishments.
WCM members also give financial assistance to the Falls Church-
McLean Children’s Center, which offers quality preschool and pre-K daycare to children of
families with limited resources.
Health and Homelife. WCM Health and Homelife Committee members involve
themselves in special charities worthy of extra focus.
An example is WCM’s support of Second Story (formerly Alternative House) which provides a safe haven for teenagers facing crisis situations.
In addition to an annual WCM financial donation, WCM members provide monthly
supplies ranging from laundry detergent to baby food to batteries – whatever may be
needed at Second Story at any one time.
This committee also has given focused ongoing support to SHARE and Capital Hospice.
